The first sets the tone for the rest
It is the first day of the year 2024, and I first want to say a very big happy new year to everyone reading this! It's humbling to see that you are sparing the first day of the year to read this newsletter. I want to also say a big thank you for that!
Part of my new year resolutions is to make the newsletters shorter and straight to the point this year, unless it cannot be helped, and so, we better get into it, eh?
There is really no deep meaning to the question in the title. That's just what it is. We believe that every thing we do 'first' sets the tone for everything we will do later, and so many people try to do everything impeccably on the first day of the year. People eat their best food for breakfast, wear their best clothes, be around their best people, kill the fattest chicken, wear their best shoes and all the rest.

In fact, it's a family tradition that on New Year days, we eat Pounded Yam at home, like, proper pounded yam that has been hammered inside a morter with a pestle, not the ones you guys have been eating with yam blended using electric blender. God knows where you got that from!
It is just too bad that I'm not with my family this morning to have the same sumptuous meal, and so I asked myself this morning, to set the tone for the year 2024, what am I having for breakfast?
Okay, I lied. The question is a little more than just about food. Stop looking at the pictures and wishing the meals will come out of the letter and focus!
I said earlier that the first sets the tone for the rest, and so beyond food, everything else you do first is a breakfast for all you would be doing in the year. This is why it is important to carefully select all the things you'd be doing that will set the tone for the remainder of the year.
Did you set daily goals? Let your breakfast be keeping the commitments you set with yourself today by deliberately achieving those goals.
What words are you saying to yourself and to other people for breakfast?
Who are you speaking to for breakfast?
What are you lending your eyes to for breakfast?
What books are you reading for breakfast?
Who or what are you listening to for breakfast?
What actions are you taking for breakfast?
What work are you doing for breakfast?
What habits have you started inculcating in the year 2024?
Did you pray for breakfast? Did you meditate? Did you give thanks?
How did you interact with social media for breakfast?
You see? It's not just about the food, or the clothes, or the shoes and all the other external things. It is also, even more importantly, about the actions you take and the things you let inside of you through your eyes, mouth, ears, and nose for breakfast.
Even though I'm having bread and a cup of tea for breakfast when I'd rather be having some hot pounded yam and egusi soup, I am glad and grateful that the meal isn't as important as all the other things I have gotten right for breakfast this morning.
