In a world where everyone and everything is vying for attention, a world where everyone is being pulled inadvertently in different directions, with an influx of options, information, opportunities…; the ability to be laser clear on what you want is a superpower, and unlike any other superpower, this one is like a muscle that can be built up with intention.
If you want to ever make anything of yourself in this life, clarity is a non-negotiable. Nobody has ever been anything of significance in this life without knowing exactly what they wanted to be. This isn't even about knowing the full picture because, except you've been to the end in a different life and this life is playing out the exact same way, or you've got some spiritual/supernatural oversight and you've been shown all that will happen as some other people claim, you can't know the full picture from where you are, but you can, at least intentionally craft out exactly what you want to do with your life, and exactly who you want to become.
Nobody has ever been anything of significance in this life without knowing exactly what they wanted to be.
Not to say that you'd be exactly that, or that everything will work out just as you've planned, in fact, it's in your interest to bear in mind that everything that can go wrong will probably go wrong at some point. So the idea is not necessarily to make sure 100% that things turn out as you want. If it doesn't, then what happens? You throw caution to the wind and start living as life comes, going wherever the wind takes you and becoming whatever the situation demands? No, that is not the kind of life you want to live.
So what then is clarity good for? You might ask. I'll tell you a personal story.
In my life, as far as I can remember, I've wanted to be many things at different points in my life. In fact at a point, I've wanted to be three things at the same time. You can't blame me! Look at all the options!
After a while, it became exhausting because I was pulled in different directions, finding myself in different rooms I had no business being in; rooms I wasn't even deeply interested in. It suddenly made sense to me, the saying that if you don't know where you want to go, everywhere will look like it.
Until I stopped and asked myself what a life well lived would look like for me, what success would look like, and exactly what was it that I wanted to do with my life. I'd definitely share the answers to this question in a different newsletter.
Since I asked myself this question and answered it, there was a sudden clarity of the kind of skills I needed to amass, type of jobs I needed to apply for, the kind of people I should surround myself with, and little by little, things started to take shape.
Not everything has gone according to plan, and I am sure that not everything will go according to plan, but the simple fact that I have a plan makes all the difference in the world. It has helped me grey out all the paths I know I don't need to follow, canceled out myriad of options I thought was for me, and then there are rooms you'd never find me in now!
Point is, since the moment I arrived at what I wanted to do with my life, and what success will look like for me, that clarity has helped me build up a plan, and through the plan, I know the things I need to do. Beyond that, I feel like I know myself enough because I know the things I don't want, the things I won't do, and the people I wouldn't associate with.
It's saying, “I know where I'm going. I don't necessarily know for sure how I'll get there, but the path is shaping out step by step and it will become clearer the further down the road I come.”
I was reading a book some time ago, and the author was sharing how that you don't see all the roads before you get on the journey. You just have to know where you're going. You only see the road that is immediately in front of you, and sometimes, you are even rerouted to a different road you didn't even know you were going to pass through, and that's completely fine.
You don't see all the roads before you get on the journey. You just have to know where you're going.
Then there's the equation of the Universe. Intentions are a real thing. If you intend to go somewhere, and you desire it with all your heart, the universe will conspire to get you there. The universe will bring forth opportunities and put you in positions to get you to where you intend to go. Now, imagine you don't have a clear intention? All you do is confuse and frustrate the universe.
If there's anything you take from this, take away the idea that you need to be clear on what you want to do, who you want to become, where you want to go, and what success will look like for your life. Write it down. You'd be shocked how suddenly you see the path immediately in front of you, eliminating all the other options. The only thing left would be for you to start walking.
In a world where you can be anything and everything, gaining clarity on who you want to become is a superpower. Who do you want to become?
