Writing it down is how it becomes a goal. An idea that doesn't become a goal can never be achieved.
— Abiola Okun
The last couple of weeks have been a lot for me. It has been grueling and hectic, sometimes I feel like I am sleepwalking through the day, but at the same time, it has been productive, fulfilling, transforming, and most inspiring.
Amidst the 30-Day 5 AM Challenge we did at the Readers Community I belong to, Emprinté Readers Hub, kickstarting the year, the changes that have happened in that community, the projects we've embarked on, my most amazing full-time job, my brand, my relationship with myself and other people, I have learned a lot in these past days, and these things have made me resolute on the path I am on.
I was in the bathroom a couple of days ago, and I found myself so grateful, so animated by everything going on in my life. I remember recognizing that I was, at that moment, experiencing the greatest feeling in the world.
What is the greatest feeling in the world? Happiness? Maybe happiness will come a distant third. You could even say Love, and if you do, you will probably have an argument, because even the Bible says Love is the greatest. Who am I to dispute the Bible? However, I am not even talking about love, in this newsletter. Or maybe, depending on how you see it, this feeling might just be love expressing itself in a different color.
Right there and then in that bathroom, I recognized that the greatest feeling in the world is thinking up something that never existed, conceiving an idea, and bringing that idea to life.
I'll say it again, the greatest feeling in the world is conceiving an idea, whether by divine inspiration or mental aspiration, letting the idea consume you so much that it is all you think, talk about, and write about, taking steps towards making that idea come to life, seeing those steps yield gradually, and eventually holding that once upon a time intangible idea in your hand as a tangible, present-day reality.
Just stepping back and taking it all in, pausing and looking at what your simple idea, an idea you could have easily shoved aside like all the many other ideas that had previously come into your mind has become? Now that is the greatest feeling in the world.
You will notice that there are actual steps to make this happen. These steps, if followed through, would yield invariably to this greatest feeling in the world.
Step 1 - Conceive an idea
It all starts with having an idea come to your mind. Ideas are fleeting, the same idea that's coming to your mind is also coming to the mind of other people experiencing similar things that you're experiencing. So when you think about something, when you conceive an idea in your mind, you're not special. Between 100 and 1,000 people are at that moment, conceiving the same idea. The person who's set apart is the one who leaves this step onto the next.
Step 2 - Let it consume you
Think about it, meditate on it, talk about it, ink it into paper, draw it, visualize it, and let it consume your psyche. Go crazy for it! Make it such that it's all you talk about, you never pass off a chance at talking about it. You journal it and put it into pen. Writing it down is how it becomes a goal. An idea that doesn't become a goal can never be achieved. Do this long enough, it becomes a shadow around you that is begging to come to life. Do this long enough that you become completely miserable if you don't take the next step.
Step 3 - Take steps towards making it come to life
This is where you meet with people who you think can help your cause, people who are genuinely on the same trajectory as you, and people who believe in the same things you do. Look for partners, look for where you can get resources to help, and design a system that can make you start in the smallest of ways, towards achieving the idea. Put structures in place to make this happen.
If it is a skill you need to learn, do everything possible to learn it. If you need to go to certain places or get into certain communities or relationships to make it possible, do that. Do what you need to do to achieve that goal.
These are specific action plans that will get you to your desired goal.
Eventually, these systems and structures, these action plans, and the steps you take will begin to form and culminate gradually into something tangible. The more steps you take, the more it grows gradually from an intangible idea to a tangible creation.
It's just the way a child forms in its mother's womb. It goes from intangible to tangible, then to an actual human that you can touch, a human that can birth another human.
And the moment you pause and just look at what you have achieved so far, no matter how little, that’s where the greatest feeling in the world lies.
And you know what is even better? It's the fact that now you have entered the realm where you know that you can turn things that don't exist into things that exist.
Now you know that if you can achieve something small, as long as you think about it, and take the steps necessary as you have taken to achieve what you achieved earlier, then you can achieve even much bigger, gigantic things with your life. Oh! The self-confidence that comes out of that!
That is the realm where you become a legend. The realm of serial winners. The realm of masters. The realm where every single person who can conceive an idea in their heart belongs. The realm only very few will get to because not everyone will take the steps necessary.
It all starts with an idea, and letting the idea consume you so much that you put it down on paper, think about it, talk about it, and then go on to perform it little by little. Anyone can do this. These are practical steps, and this is how I know that, if you can think it, you can ink it, and if you can ink it, you can bring it to life.
And I cannot discard how important divine direction is in all of this. If you are like me and you believe in God, in a higher power that created this world and all that live and breathe in it, then you cannot ignore the place of divine direction, because the idea did not come to you by chance. Yes, if it came to your mind, it can come to your hands, but also, if it came to your mind, it most definitely came from somewhere! Think about it and seek direction from where it came from.
You are reading this, and so I strongly believe that you have a functional and intelligent mind, so I implore you to start today on that idea that has come into your mind multiple times, and head on into the greatest feeling in the world!
See you on the other side!
