Perhaps for you, a north star is that bright star you see when you're looking in the sky at night directly towards the north. It holds no meaning to you and you're wondering why you're supposed to be finding your North Star.
First, let's set the foundation by understanding the meaning of a North Star in this context.
A North Star, used interchangeably with True North, is simply the star that leads you home. It's the inner core, the compass that takes you to where you're supposed to go, that makes you who you're supposed to be. Your North Star is your passion and purpose that makes your life worth living.
For many, it is a lifelong pursuit, almost like the pursuit of happiness, but this is what makes life worth living; finding your north star and following it home.
How has the journey been for you? Or have you never even thought about it? Let's change that this week.
There are many things that catch our fancy. Many relationships that tickle our interest, many skills that come easy for us, many interests that we like to give ourselves to, many ventures that'd help make us wealthy, but there's that ONE thing, that ONE relationship, that ONE interest, that ONE skill that leads us home, and it is our mission to find that ONE thing.
I know you're a genius, multitalented, a Jack with diverse kinds of gifts and skills, and you can most probably excel in so many things if you so choose, but to be a person who will be truly reckoned with, to be a person who feels truly fulfilled, you have to find an answer to the one thing that your life resounds.
It's a simple question of; If you were a company, what is one thing you'd be selling? What will be your mission and vision? What will be your goals for the next 5 to 10 years?
A company that sells ballpen today and car tyres tomorrow, and then next Monday you see the company getting into the refrigeration business is a company that will never be taken seriously. A company that will never excel. Humans are like that.
You are like that.
If you follow the direction of all the stars you find in the sky, if you follow the direction of all the passions and abilities you have inside you without making a proper enquiry into whether it truly brings you fulfilment, whether it is part of the attribute of who you see yourself becoming, whether it is something you can do enduringly and passionately for the rest of your life, whether it is something that you would love written on your epitaph when you pass on, then you'll be like a company with no specialisation, no vision, a company whose purpose is not clear to anybody, even to itself.
Remember the old saying, if a person doesn't know where he is going, everywhere will look like it, and then such a person will end up where he never wanted.
Here's another good one by Late Dr. Myles Munroe, "If the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable."
I know you might want to make the argument about how companies diversify too, but show me a company who tried to diversify without first becoming an authority in a single venture. To diversify, to accumulate, you first have to lay a sturdy foundation upon which everything else is built.
You have to find your North Star, and the beauty of it is that it's already inside of you. You only need to make a point of finding it.
I asked earlier, if you were a company, what would you be selling? What would you stand for? What solution would you be providing with all the skills and passions you have?
What is that thing you don't mind spending your life for, that will give you true and utmost fulfilment? That one thing that isn't about the money for you, or the recognition, or the possession. Just something you want your life to represent.
That is your True North. And it is inside of you.
Here's the truth. Until you find your true north, every other star will look attractive, and you'll spend your time, energy and resources trying to service those stars and never experience fulfilment.
One of the major pointers of growth is that you have one vision that you want your life to service. A vision that you can be (or you already are) servicing on a smaller scale right now.
Until you find your true north, every other star will look attractive, and you'll spend your time, energy and resources trying to service those stars and never experience fulfilment.
That vision is your True North, and the earlier you start making enquiries of yourself about it, the faster you head in that direction, and the more impact you can make on that path for whatever is left of your life.
It is that ONE thing you want more than anything. The ONE thing you will love to spend your life doing. The ONE thing that you could do with every minute today and won't have any regrets if you didn't wake up tomorrow morning.
That is your North Star.
Spend the week finding it. And if you have found it, spend the week, and the rest of your life, heading in that direction. Let every single thing you do culminate into that ONE thing.
And watch a life of legacy happen.
To your growth,
