When you start showing up as exactly who you are, you start radically changing your life.
— Brianna Wiest
The reason why many potential creators never create anything in life and go back to their graves still full of themselves, full of their gifts, and full of the life they could have potentially lived is that they were waiting for everything to be perfect.
It won't. It can't. It will never be perfect!
I know of many people — myself included — who have many ideas in their head, who have embarked on a project many years ago and are still on that project till date because they are waiting to make it perfect.
I know of many people — myself included — who haven't even bothered starting the idea in their head because they believe they need the perfect tools, the perfect location, the perfect position, the perfect team, and the perfect resources to get started. They haven't started because they haven't become the version of themselves they have in their heads that can pull the project off.
Well, sorry to burst your bubbles, you will never have the perfect tools! You will never have the perfect location! You will never have the perfect position! All your resources will never be pitch perfect! And in case you don't already know? You will never be the perfect version of yourself that you want to be in your head, because that perfect person will continue to shift and upgrade in time. If you ever get to perfection, then you're a goner. Just die already!
You will never have the perfect tools!
I wrote a newsletter to you some time last year about how imperfect you are. You can find it here. I also posted a podcast a couple of weeks ago, To The Imperfects, so if there's anything you already know as a consistent reader or listener, it's the fact that you're imperfect, completely imperfect.
Since we have established that, I won't hammer on it again in this newsletter.
The purpose of this letter is to bring to your attention that, as an imperfect, why are you waiting for everything to be perfect before you embark on the project of your life?
Why are you waiting for perfect resources and perfect conditions for you to show up?
Why are you waiting to be something we have all agreed you can never be to do something you can actually do?
Guess what it sounds like? Self sabotage!
Why are you waiting to be something we have all agreed you can never be to do something you can actually do?
The fear of doing things imperfectly has held us back for too long, ironically, when it should even spur us to do those very same things. Doing it Imperfectly should be an extra motivation to doing it in the first place, not a reason not to!
If you wait till you're able to do it perfectly, you will become Methuselah, and you won't even see God.
It means even when you wait for many, many years and you finally resolve that you are now in the perfect position with all the right tools to do everything and you go on to do it, you'd realize that the project wouldn't even be perfect, because there will always be something to improve. ALWAYS!
What you'd have done is played yourself, wasted many long years in obscurity doing nothing, only to come back 20 years later to do the same imperfect things you'd have done 20 years ago.
The essence of this newsletter is for you to start, dare to do things imperfectly. When you take the pressure off your mind about wanting to do the project perfectly, you will be light enough to carry your imperfect self to work on that project, and then when the project comes out as it should; imperfect, you can then fine tune, rearrange, and make the imperfection a little less imperfect.
That's all you can do, through your growth, to make the imperfection a little less imperfect.
That's all we can do as humans, through our growth, to make our imperfection a little less imperfect.
Imagine all the companies who have transformed our lives in this 21st century today waited for everything to be perfect? Even the multibillion dollar companies today still update their systems and their apps every year. Some even run updates multiple times every week! Because they are imperfect, and they simply try to make their imperfection a little less imperfect with those updates.
All we can do as humans, through our growth, is to make our imperfection a little less imperfect.
Take the advice of Brianna West in The Mountain is You, to show up as exactly who you are, to do the things you want to do right now as who you are. This is the playbook to radically changing your life.
In her own words;
"The truth is that you do not change your life when you fix every piece and call that healing. You change your life when you start showing up exactly as you are. You change your life when you become comfortable with being happy here
(with being imperfect), even if you want to go forward(and you should want to go forward). You change your life when you can love yourself even though you don't look exactly the way you want to. When you start showing up as exactly who you are, you start radically changing your life."
In the final analysis, I say, go on the strength of what you are right now; imperfect, and do the very thing that has been gnawing at you, do it as imperfectly as you are, then go on working daily to make the imperfection a little less imperfect.
Do not aim for perfection, dear imperfect. Aim for imperfection, and work everyday to make the imperfection less imperfect.
To your growth,
Abiola Okunsanya,
